The video, Web 2.0… The Machine is Us/Using Us by Professor Wesch, show how the concept of Web 2.0 has changed the way we (people throughout the world) use the Internet. Before Web 2.0, website content was controlled by the website owners. The text of a webpage was as integrated as the style components. Web 2.0 has separated the content from the style which allows for a single block of text to be used in different ways by any website. This lead to the birth of a new generation of websites whose content was to be controlled by the users, not the owners, of the site.
I think that the title for this video was chosen to show viewers that we are the web now the web because we are the ones who are creating the content. The way we live our lives has changed. Black writes, “New ways of communicating and sharing information over the web are increasingly becoming integrated into everyday life” (2007). However, there are millions of dollars being made off of these websites that we voluntarily create the content for and promote for free. This is how the Machine is also using us.
Professor Wesch warns the audience of some problems we face with Web 2.0 such as copyright and privacy. He also points out how the ever changing nature of the web makes retaining a formal history nearly impossible. He wants everyone to be aware of these issues and see how the machine is us and yet using us but I don’t think the average users is listening.
